The own-brand of Johann Friedrich Lieb
(born 1737 in Stuttgart)

In the middle age, the use of own-brands was widely spread to mark property and misc belongings. They were at the same time also used as a declaration of intent instead of the signature. Further, own-brands were applied to gravestones.

Along with the rise of educational background the use of scripture, letters, and numbers was gradually preferred and the relevance of own-brands faded away.

The own-brand of Johann Friedrich Lieb was attached above the front door of his house in 1795. It did still exist 1936 in the Eberhardstrasse 53, in Stuttgart.

The own-brand consists of the number 4 with an anchor as the base (the number 4 together with other signs occur frequently in own-brands).

Johann Friedrich Lieb added his initials JL to the own-brand.

The joungest son always inherited the onw-brand. The older sons also took over the own-brand, but carried out individual alterations to the own-brand.
